What are RS-422 and RS-485?
Answer
Both are standards set by the EIA in relation to electrical characteristics of balanced interfaces (e.g., drivers and receivers) and there are many similarities between the two standards.
With RS-422, more than one receiver (signal receiver) can be connected to one driver (signal sender) on the same transmission line but no allowances have been made for multiple drivers.
The RS-485 is an extended version of the RS-422, which allows multiple drivers (with 3-state outputs) and multi-drop (party line) configuration.
RS-422 and RS-485 allow faster transmissions than the RS-232C standard (applicable for baud rates of 20 Kbits/s or less).
