What is 'echoback'? What does 'echoback' mean?
Returning characters that the user sent from a computer from communications software, a modem, or a host computer. An echoback is used to confirm if characters input from a keyboard are transmitted correctly. Echobacks are not performed or are replaced with special symbols for passwords and other information that are not to be disclosed to third parties. Local echobacks for communications software and modems are called local echoes.
